The Rich History of Chandler

Chandler is a beautiful desert city that has a colorful historical background and most people don’t realize that it has such a historical significance. While it is boasts some of the most beautiful mountains in the entire Phoenix area, Chandler has grown to be a destination for shopping and sightseeing. Historic Downtown Chandler is now a place to go to visit museums and learn about the city’s earliest days. Visit the Chandler Museum to learn all about this fascinating city!

The history of Chandler has led to it becoming one of the largest cities in the greater Phoenix area. It was founded on May 17, 1912 by Dr. A.J. Chandler. He was the very first veterinary surgeon in the area and founded Chandler just months after Arizona formally became a state. He was instrumental in building up the City of Chandler and even helped build an early system of canals which helped to bring water into the desert city. Interestingly enough, he also brought the trade of ostrich feathers and plumage to Chandler during a time when ostrich feathers were a part of the fashion industry. Ostrich feathers were used to adorn women’s clothing. This helped to make a largely positive business impact in the area. In fact, today if you stop in at Crust Chandler next to the historic Hotel San Marcos Golf Resort, you can visit the “speakeasy” downstairs that is now called, “The Ostrich Room.”

During World War II, Chandler's population doubled and reached 3,800 by 1950 and that was the same year Dr. Chandler passed away. Dr. A.J. Chandler Park is located in Historic Downtown Chandler and is now the site of many well-attended city events each year. On May 24, 1954, the status of Chandler was upgraded from a town to a city and the population has continued to grow.

In more recent years, Chandler's borders have been expanded and the population has boomed from 30,000 in 1980 to more than 240,000 today. The economy of Chandler is robust and includes many industries. While agriculture is still somewhat of a vital element, Chandler now enjoys a strong manufacturing and electronics sector, due in part to the presence of Intel.
