Sobas in Gilbert is a Gem of the East Valley
Stop whatever you’re doing and add an event to your personal calendar to go to Sobas in Gilbert. Sobas is a brand new restaurant that is just a step above fast casual that features a variety of Asian entrees. You will find some tried-and-true favorites, but you will also get some unique flavors and some dishes that you may have not tried elsewhere! The brains and brawn behind Sobas are owners Berekk Blackwell and Mike Belles. With a wealth of restaurant experience in both of their backgrounds, they have really brought a healthy and tasty concept to Gilbert Rd. and the 202.
Blackwell lived in Japan for two years and it is obvious that he fell in love with the culture as well as the food. At Sobas, he and Belles have incorporated traditional flavors and recipes from Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam to create a menu that is literally unlike any other in the Valley! Want to try a Korean mac and cheese that features diced kimchi and pork belly? You’ll find that and so much more at Sobas.
Bowls at Sobas include the Korean mac and cheese, pad Thai, Asian pesto penne, yakisoba stir-fry, sriracha alfredo, ramen and traditional pho. Some sauces are spicier than others and if you’re not sure what you would like, just get your sauce on the side. Want a little more veggies and a little less noodles, or vice versa? Just let them know. I particularly liked the pad Thai bowl which I ordered with crispy pork belly mixed in to the fresh veggies and noodles. I loved the pad Thai sauce at Sobas and the addition of the pork belly was a nice change from chicken or shrimp which I normally would get with that kind of bowl. We also tried the yakisoba stir-fry that was almost more veggies than it was yakisoba noodles! The teriyaki stir-fry sauce was a bit spicier on this one, so we ordered it on the side. The stir-fry dish includes yakisoba noodles, broccoli, red peppers, onions and snap peas topped with jalapenos and green onions.
On the night of our media visit, we tried several things that we absolutely fell in love with and will make us return. We tried two of the starters from the Sobas menu, including the pork and seeds and the fresh spring rolls. The pork and seeds is such a unique dish! It features a generous portion of thinly sliced Asian pork (served cool) with prickly pear hot mustard and colorful sesame seeds on the side. The mustard has a nice kick to it and the addition of the sesame seeds imparts a slight crunch and a nutty flavor. Next, we noshed on fresh spring rolls. These are not your typical spring rolls. Rather, these are bean sprouts, Thai basil, carrots, cilantro, mango-avocado salsa wrapped in a see-through rice paper. Stuffed full of such fresh and tasty ingredients, this is one appetizer that is healthy and you will feel great about eating it!
Next up was the bao. What is bao? Don’t worry, I wasn’t familiar with this little scrumptious sandwich-y/slider style dish, either. Bao is served on a type of bread that is sort of like a pita, but with a more squishy/marshmallow-y texture. The bread also gives just a hint of sweetness and with the different texture of the bao bread, it’s certainly a nice departure from what you might expect! Try bao mi, el gaucho, steak and bleu, mahi manapua and peno popper. Served traditionally or grilled, you will want to try this awesome little sandwich. We particularly loved the steak and bleu with sliced rib-eye, bleu cheese crumbles, crispy onions, tomato, green onions and just a kiss of horseradish.
For those of you with kids, there is a great kids menu, which includes ramen, mac and cheese, chicken skewers, rib-eye skewers, chicken and cheese bao or a chicken quesadilla. Choose a side including strawberry Go-Gurt, chips or steamed broccoli and you have one of the best meal values anywhere that also boasts something just a little different.
Salads, starters, blended boba and iced boba teas also highlight the menu at Sobas. Try iced boba in black, green, herbal mint, matcha, chai, milk tea or Thai tea. The lemonade with huckleberry puree and boba was also pretty darn tasty!
